Exhibition 2011 - PACE
-6'x6' square canvases, discovering endless permutations by dividing the canvas with pencil lines and varying the tonal range within a palette of greys.
-A continued line of aesthetic inquiry into the language of geometry, light, and color as the ideal vehicle for introspection.
-Martin '89 - "The goal of life is happiness and to respond to life as though it were perfect is the way to happiness. It is also the way to positive art work..It is commonly thought that the intellect is responsible for everything that is made and done. It is commonly thought that everything that is can be put into words. But there is a wide range of emotional responses that we make that cannot be put into words. We are so used to making these emotional responses that we are not consciously aware of them till they are represented as ART WORK."
-The work has a muted and understated aesthetic but nevertheless arresting. A reduction of our sensory experience - of the information that is the make up of our lives.
-Martin - "I believe in the hand, minimalists believe in mechanical reproduction."
-Martin - "Most people are so distracted by what's going on around them that they have trouble realizing that they have abstract emotions. But if an artist can depict those emotions, and if people respond to the art, then they realize that they've had those same emotions all the time, without knowing it."
-Martin was one artist who was adamantly opposed to the idea of "Self". Martin - "Art work is a representation of our devotion to life. The enormous pitfall is devotion to oneself instead of to life. All works that are self-devoted are absolutely ineffective".
